Introduction to the Treo "Network Select" Hack

For PalmOS Treo 600, 650.
This does not apply to the Treo 680
This does not apply to Windows Mobile versions

Treo 680: These instructions do not appear to work on the Treo 680.  The same or similar method should (may) work, but I do not have Treo 680 and have never attempted to hack this.  I do know making the same hex edit on the same file on the 680 will not work.  A different edit may, but what bytes that need to be edited is what has to be figured out.
Explore the following thread on Treo Central to see how the hack was initially figured out if you're interested in attempting to hack this.  By all means contact me if you figure it out and I'll gladly post it:

Some users on TreoCentral forums did some digging and found a way to hack the Treo so that it ignores the Cingular SIM's instruction to hide the manual network selection ('select network') menu item.  I added a little additional investigation and helped narrow the exact hack and came up with a simple clean way to create the hack.  If you'd like to see the history of that discussion, the forum thread can be found at this link.  The only catch is that every version of Treo software must have it's own hack version.   So if you have a Treo with Cingular software, you must use the hack for the Cingular Treo.  And when Palm issues a software updates, you must obtain a new hack created for the new software version.  I recommend you read how this hack works (coming soon).

The download page contains all versions of the hacks that are available.  If you do not see the version that matches your Treo, do not try to use another version.  If you do you will experience perpetual reboots on your Treo, and the only way to escape it is to do a 'hard reset' returning you Treo back to factory default state.  If you need a version that's not here, then contact me and send me the necessary file from your Treo by following the instructions on the contact page.  The hack is very easy and very quick to create (changing 4 bytes with a hex editor) and once I create it for your version I'll post it for everyone to use.  Or you can hack it yourself using how to (hack your own.)  Also it may be the case that you just need to upgrade your Treo to the most current software from Palm to use a hack version found here.

To determine your software version:

  1. Select Phone/Send

  2. Select Menu, then Options.

  3. From the Options menu, select Phone Info.

  4. On the Phone Info screen, look for the Software and next to is your software version.  An example of the software version is: Treo650-01.71-ENA.

Treo software updates are located at the Palm.com support web site:
